Target: Covid-19 vaccine

Since the beginning of the corona virus pandemic, hackers have tried to thwart efforts to develop the COVID-19 vaccine. However, as vaccines are developed, the focus of hackers seems to shift to their distribution.

A new disturbing trend of cybercrime that is directed towards medical institutions and the vaccine against Covid-19 is a global reality. Medical institutions have been targets of hacker attacks before, but never in such crisis conditions, experts claim.

"The biggest attacks are aimed primarily at large corporations, ICT systems of special importance, ie critical infrastructure, where we would single out the health segment and the financial sector, which in the meantime had an increase in fishing campaigns by over 200 percent," RATEL stated.

As the health sector fights the pandemic, working to improve the treatment and care of patients with new technologies, criminals and cyber-threat actors are seeking to exploit the vulnerabilities associated with these changes.

With the extreme efforts of medical professionals to deal with the virus, time and resources for education about network risks and data compromise have been minimized.

Why healthcare is currently target no.1 for cyber attacks?

1.      Patients private information can be extremely valuable to attackers

2.      Medical devices are an easy entry point for attackers

3.      Medical personnel access the data remotely, opening up more opportunities for cyber attack

4.      Healthcare professionals do not have enough time to educate about new technologies that deal with information system security

5.      The number of devices used in hospitals makes it difficult to maintain safety

6.      Confidential patient information must be available to staff both on-site and remotely and on multiple devices

7.      Outdated technology in many smaller institutions

Experts advise not to agree to any blackmail, because that is how one becomes an accomplice in a criminal act and sponsors cybercrime, but to report every cyber attack to the Department of the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia for high-tech crime, and that education is the most important.

The good news is that healthcare leaders are ready to increase investment in cyber security.

It is crucial to choose a partner, a technological expert in cybercrime, who will provide solutions to increase protection and thus influence the reduction of cybercrime with an adequate solution for the security of information systems.
