Explosive growth in the number of cyber attacks is destroying the economy

The number of cyber attacks each year significantly exceeds the number of attacks from the previous year, so we have a situation where the number of attacks is higher than ever before. Many cybersecuritiy experts predict that this trend will continue.

The increase in the number of attacks is a consequence of many factors, including the increase in cryptocurrency trading that is difficult to track, the trend of working from home, which resulted in new IT vulnerabilities, increasing expertise and sophistication of attackers who are further motivated after each successful attack, politics etc.

A cyber attack can have really far-reaching consequences which is best seen in the example from the beginning of this month, when Kaseya was attacked. It is a company that provides information technology services to other companies. After this attack, over 1000 companies had encrypted servers and workstations, and the vendor assumed that this would affect thousands of small businesses. The attackers demanded $70 million in bitcoins from Kaseya in exchange for a recovery program. If a transaction occured, it would be the highest amount ever paid to hackers for a single ransomware attack. These funds would further encourage the hacker group. They would be able to procure even better equipment, recruit even better cyber attackers for their group, and they could become even more daring.

One of the very fierce attacks was carried out on one of the most powerful American companies for the distribution of oil and oil derivatives, Colonial Pipeline. This attack was also marked by extreme market reactions. On the east coast of the United States, consumers started en masse to buy fuel and store it. To stop the chaos that ensued, the company paid the hacker group 4.4 million in bitcoin. Fortunately, the police finally managed to track down this hacker group. The victim of the cyber attack was also the world's largest meat processing company JBS. Following the attack in May this year, its plants in Australia, the United States and Canada were temporarily closed. JBS paid the hackers $11 million in bitcoin.

There are also known examples of compromising data from Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as an attack on a partner of the Volkswagen Group, which also resulted in compromising personal data. Victims of cyber attack were also Apple, Sony, Blizzard, Evernote, the US Army and who knows how many other organizations - companies often hide that they experienced the attack in order to protect their reputation.

Cyber attacks are becoming not only more frequent, but also more complex. When it comes to ransomware, it is becoming increasingly difficult to decrypt files without paying a ransom and there are increasing amounts of money that attackers are asking for.

According to the research of the greatest business risks conducted by the Alliance Group on an annual basis, cyber attacks have climbed to the third place of the greatest business risks. According to their data, these attacks cost the world economy over 1 billion dollars last year, which is 50% more than two years ago.

How to protect from cyber attacks?

There is no 100% information system protection and there are no 10 unified steps.
The first step is awareness that cybercrime is on the rise year by year and that information systems must be protected by adequate technologies. Cyber security experts will know best what these technologies are and how they are integrated into the existing infrastructure.

Don't wait for the attack to happen to your company, think on time about one of your company's most valuable resources - digital data.
